Why ASTM E84 Class A Fire Rating Matters for Healthcare Wall Protection

Oct 15, 2026

Fire safety is non-negotiable in healthcare. Among the standards specifiers cite, ASTM E84 (the Steiner Tunnel test) is the one that decides whether a wall finish is approved. Here is what Class A actually means for wall protection.

What ASTM E84 measures

The test measures flame spread and smoke developed when a material is exposed to flame in a 25-foot tunnel. Results are indexed against red oak (100) and asbestos-cement board (0).

The Class A threshold

  • Class A: Flame Spread Index 0–25 (the strictest, required in most hospital corridors and patient areas);
  • Class B: 26–75; Class C: 76–200.

Why hospitals require Class A

Healthcare occupancies prioritise slow flame spread and low smoke to protect evacuation and staff response. A Class A rigid vinyl wall panel therefore clears the specification without separate intumescent upgrades.

Global alignment

ASTM E84 Class A maps closely to EN 13501-1 (B-s1,d0) in Europe and supports LEED documentation. PinGer® rigid vinyl (PETG) wall panels are engineered to these ratings, giving international projects a single, defensible specification.

Takeaway: ask every wall-finish supplier for the ASTM E84 (or EN 13501-1) test report—verbal "fire rated" claims are not enough for healthcare approval.
